Quarterback Lamar Jackson missed the second half with an injury, but the Ravens were able to hold on for a 24-18 win over the Tennessee Titans.
His injury was a major factor as the Ravens did not score in the second half. Jackson suffered the injury while being sacked on the Ravens last offensive play of the first half. He was walking along the sidelines in the second half, so hopefully he was held out as a precaution.
The Ravens defense made enough plays, including a big one on the game’s opening drive with an interception by Trenton Simpson. The Titans would answer with a 10-play drive to tie the game at seven, but after that would struggle for most of the game. They scored a late touchdown in the fourth to make it close, but the Ravens recovered the onside kick to finish out the game.
The offense was clicking in the first half with Jackson finding Zay Flowers for several big plays, including a touchdown. Flowers had six catches for 119 yards in the first half, but only finished with 118 yards on eight catches after the offensive struggles in the second half. Jackson was 15-20 for 222 yards and two touchdowns before suffering his injury, and Derrick Henry could not break free against his former team, finishing with only 73 yards.
The defense was improved from last week, especially on third downs. The Titans only converted 20% of their third downs and were forced to punt five times. They got early turnovers in but could not come up with many big plays in the second half. Titans quarterback Cam Ward was only sacked once and was able to escape the Ravens pressure all game.
Ravens’ backup quarterback Tyler Huntley was efficient, going 8-9 for 63 yards but could not push the ball down the field. Henry was bottled up in the second with 14 carries for only 34 yards. Rookie Vega Ioane finished his first start at center without any major issues. He did not have any penalties called on him and only had a couple of bad snaps.
Penalties and mistakes were once again a major issue for this team. They finished with 13 penalties for 131 yards and missed a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that would have sealed that game. Kicker Tyler Loop had an up-and-down game as he missed his final attempt but set the all-time record at M&T Bank Stadium with a 64-yarder in the first half.
The Ravens head on the road for a showdown with the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night for Sunday Night Football, the Ravens first primetime game of the season.
